Meat Balls in Tomato Sauce (Daoud Pasha)


Meat Balls

  • 1 lb ground beef or lamb
  • 1 large onion, finely chopped
  • 1/2 cup parsley leaves
  • 1 tsp. all spice
  • 1/4 tsp. black pepper
  • 1/4 tsp. ground cinnamon
  • 1/8 tsp. ground nutmeg
  • 1 tsp. salt
  • 1 tbsp. olive or canola oil

Tomato Sauce

  • 1 medium Onion, finely chopped
  • 1 lb tomatoes, peeled and finely chopped
  • Green or Red Chili (optional)
  • Salt and ground black pepper, to taste


  1. Finely chop the onions and parsley (food processor can be used).

  2. Add the spices and the onion mixture to the ground beef and mix well.

  3. Shape the meat into balls and fry in 1 tbsp. of oil.  Remove from oil and set aside.

  4. In the same saucepan, sautee the chopped onions, adding more oil if needed.  Season with salt.

  5. Add the finely chopped chili and stir fry for a few minutes.

  6. Stir in the chopped tomatoes and season with salt and black pepper.

  7. Bring to a boil, add the meatballs and simmer.

  8. Serve with plain or vermicelli rice.
