1 1/4 cup flour
4 oz butter, cut into small cubes
1 tbsp. sugar
Pinch of salt
1/4 cup ice cold water
1 tbsp. milk (for brushing the dough)
Pinch of sugar (for sprinkling the dough before baking)
2 large apples or any fruit of choice, sliced
1 tbsp. brown sugar
lemon juice, to taste (optional)
Ground cinnamon, to taste
Ground nutmeg, to taste
In a mixing bowl, combine the flour, salt and sugar and stir to blend.
Add the butter and with your fingertips or a pastry blender, cut the butter into the flour mixture until they are the size of peas.
Add the water and gently mix with a fork to incorporate the mixture. The dough should hold together when pressed; if not, add a little more cold water until it does (do not overwork the dough). When the dough is ready, gather it together and form into a disc, cover with plastic wrap and chill for at least one hour.
Prepare the filling:
In a bowl, mix the sliced apples, brown sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg and lemon juice.
Assembling the galette:
On a lightly floured surface, roll out the dough into an 11 - 12" disc. Place the disc on a lightly greased baking sheet. Arrange the prepared filling on the galette leaving a border of 1 - 2 inches on all sides. Fold in the edges, brush it with milk and sprinkle with sugar (optional).
Bake in a 400 degrees F preheated oven for 35 minutes or until the crust is golden brown and the filling is bubbly.
